During the World Breast Cancer Day, Bwin takes part in the campaign to increase awareness about breast cancer and inform about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis.

Millions of women around the world are being diagnosed every day with breast cancer and thousands die each year. These facts should not frighten you. They should be a reminder that October is a month full of pink ribbons to raise awareness, “shake” us and not let us forget that prevention saves lives.

The month of pink days

October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) and was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. The aim of the NBCAM from the beginning has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

A few years later, in 1992, the Estée Lauder Companies founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to support clinical and translational research on breast cancer and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, making it one of the most successful campaigns in history.

The pink ribbon represents the pain, the anxiety, the struggle for those suffering from breast cancer and even the celebration for those who made it through. But it serves a much bigger purpose: it is the reminder that prevention is the best weapon against breast cancer.

4.500 women in Greece are struggling with the decease

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. It is often thought of as something that only affects women, but men can get it in rare cases. According to the World Health Organization, in 2020, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685.000 deaths globally. In Greece there are about 4.500 new cases annually and 1.600 deaths. Over the last decades in many high-income countries breast cancer mortality rates have been falling by 2-4% yearly. That means, that, if they continue to fall with the same rate, more that 2.5 million deaths by breast cancer can be prevented by 2040.

Prevention against cancer, the strongest weapon

Around us there are women who fought hard, stayed strong until the end and beat cancer! Prevention and early diagnosis are always considered the best defense against this enemy as now breast cancer can be treated if detected early enough.

Bwin’s initiatives, part of its corporate social responsibility program, are in alignment with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN until 2030 to create a more sustainable future.
