Bwin, in cooperation with the Union “Together for Children”, on Tuesday 12 October – taking all the necessary measures for Covid-19 – once more was present in Samothraki for the inauguration of three reconstructed courts at the Elementary School of Kamariotissa and the Highschool of the island. At the same time, the surroundings of the courts were adorned. A year after the request of the local community to the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which became known through the Government, the response from the international betting brand and the Union was immediate.
In addition to the joyful students from both schools, Zetta Makri, Deputy Minister of Education, MPs of the Prefecture of Evros, Nikolaos Galatoumos, Mayor of Samothraki, Members of the City Council, Konstantinos Bantikos, Director of Education in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, and Directors of Primary and Secondary School Education were present during a rainy day in Samothraki for the inauguration of the three courts. Alongside them, members of the Board of Directors of the Union “Together for Children”, members of the Parent Unions from both schools, as well as the famous presenter, Giorgos Lentzas, who even played a game of basketball with the team of the Highschool, attended the event. It was the best way to introduce the new courts to the community.
The reconstruction works were completed in time, before the start of the new school year, providing to every child and the young people of the island the opportunity to play, train, know and love basketball and volleyball. The new courts offer something even more important: the chance for all of them to grow the ideals of fair play. In these three courts, with a total area of 1200 sq. m., a specially designed floor, which is used in professional facilities, was laid down for extra safety. Also, delineation was placed and the necessary equipment was installed, so that the courts can be used again. At the same time, their surroundings were adorned and the students can enjoy playing in a colorful and beautiful setting. There are approximately 250 students attending the Elementary School and the Highschool from a total of 320 in the whole island. All of them now can enjoy playing in three brand new and safe courts.
Bwin in cooperation with the Union “Together for Children” supported the rest of the students of the island (70) by providing them with the necessary equipment in order to play their favorite sports. Balls, goals, training equipment for various sports, exercise mats, etc. were donated.
Zetta Makri, Deputy Minister of Education, thanked the Union and bwin for their response to the request of the local community to upgrade the sports infrastructure of the schools. A request that was met through collaborations and coordinated actions, just a year after the Prime Minister visited Samothraki last October, where he guaranteed that new sports facilities will be created. Places that would daily host the sports activities of the students, would allow them to practice various sports and strengthen their love for exercise. It was a common priority for all those involved, that, through the reconstruction of the three courts and donation of sports equipment in four Schools and two Centres for Creative Activities, highlighted the importance of giving back to the society and make the difference. Such actions offer a guide to take the next steps for the benefit and well-being of children and their families.
Nikolaos Galatoumos, Mayor of the island, thanked the Union and bwin for their decisive contribution to the completion of the project. Konstantinos Bantikos, Director of Education in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, from his part stressed that the contribution of private companies and the collaborations like the one of bwin with the Union “Together for Children” are really important in upgrading infrastructure. They also provide the tools, so that schools will have the opportunity to perform better their task.
Alexandra Martinou, President of the Union “Together for Children”, stated: “Today, here in the remote region of Samothraki, we support the children. With bwin as our ally, we upgrade sports infrastructure, making them safer and more friendly. We are laying the foundation for equal opportunities for every child and the young people in every corner of our country and especially in the outermost regions. We are grateful that bwin shares our vision”.
Finally, Ioannis Capodistrias, Managing Director of bwin Greece, added: “We are delighted to be, once more, in a remote region, proving that we remain true to our vision of supporting the society in every corner of the country. Bwin and the Union “Together for Children” have reconstructed with passion, pride and love three courts and donated sports equipment, fully understanding the importance of sports in the region and wanting to give to every child the chance to experience the benefits of athleticism. We have to thank the Directors of the schools, the Mayor and his associates, who organized this emotional event. Sports is a part of bwin’s DNA and we will continue to support local communities and the work of the Union in order to build new sports facilities and deal with discrimination.”
