More than 200 participants attended “Ethelon Days 2019”, organized by the Ethelon NGO on the International Volunteers Day. The event demonstrated that even the smallest actions can have a significantly positive social impact. In the heart of the city, 30 lectures were delivered, while three interactive workshops and six social activities were hosted.
Focusing on the environment, vulnerable groups, health and much more, speakers had the opportunity to share their personal stories of volunteering. Over 30 organizations and businesses participated in panels and lectures on volunteering and social giving. A separate discussion on corporate volunteering programs was held by company representatives, while a live cooking show was going on at the same time.
Inspired by the butterfly effect, in this year’s “Ethelon Days” attendees were able to take part simultaneously in various social events in downtown Athens. They created 100 gifts for the elderly at the “Helena Care Centre”. They also hoarded more than 250 kg of surplus fruits and vegetables from the farmers’ markets of Petralona and Kallithea to support the work of “Boroume”, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to reduce food waste and to fight malnutrition to Greece. Finally, they prepared 180 meals, which were distributed to people in need, collected plastic waste around Serafio Sport Centre and created over 400 seed bombs and 11 bee hotels. The message was simple, but important: even the smallest of actions can induce great change.
Finally, under the slogan “No portion of food should be wasted”, bwin volunteers in collaboration with the “Boroume” organization, were gathered at the Panormou farmers market on Saturday the 7th of December, to contribute in minimizing of food waste.
